Facebook adds “Find Wi-Fi” feature for all users

Facebook is rolling out its “Find Wi-Fi” feature globally, allowing users of both iOS and Android devices to find the Wi-Fi nearest their location.

A divining rod for a new generation

Last year, Facebook tested its “Find Wi-Fi” feature in select countries and only on iOS devices. The larger scale roll-out will be ideal for travelers with scarce coverage in need of internet.

The feature will be found under the “More” tab of the Facebook mobile app. Once enabled, a detailed map of hotspots and host-businesses will populate with useful information.

The hope, according to Facebook, is to generate more traffic through their mobile app while discovering more local businesses, possibly even taking users away from Google Maps.

Hotspots may vary

For a Wi-Fi hotspot to register on the new map, a business will need to enable themselves as a provider via the “Edit Page Info” tab of their own Facebook page.

Early tests have proven promising, and with a global launch, more businesses may be enticed to enable the new feature.

Coupled with the recent tests of Facebook’s internet-providing drone, Aquila, it would seem the company is squarely focused on bringing internet access to all it’s users, any way it can.
