Facebook at Work opens up the bank

Here's something you don't see every day. A bank is encouraging its employees to use Facebook during business hours.

Face the music

However it's not all kitten photos and Liking your mates's pics from last weekend's party.

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has partnered with Facebook in a landmark deal that will see Facebook at Work available to the bank's 100,000 employees.

RBS says the partnership is intended to facilitate collaboration and allow employees to communicate more efficiently.

Employees will also be able to access Facebook at Work on desktop and on mobile.

Social bank

On the surface Facebook at Work looks and feels much like standard Facebook. Users can post photos, create groups and events, send private messages and update their work profiles.

However the network is separate from employees' personal Facebook accounts, meaning all information is only available to RBS staff.

Roll out

The bank has been trialling the service since July, and says that as staff are well-versed in using Facebook minimal training has been required. The user-friendly interface also means colleagues can interact in more engaging ways.

Does this mean Facebook might be coming to a cubicle near you soon?

Watch this space to find out.
