Facebook to give fake news the boot

Unsatisfied with the systems currently in place, Facebook will boost its algorithms for the trending topics module to match the News Feed.

Off the boil

Facebook has been criticised for what has appeared as trending in recent months, not least for the company's decision to fire its news curation team and move to a wholly automated system.

The algorithms have since unearthed fake stories about, for example, a television news anchor, as well as more unsavoury articles.

The head of Facebook's News Feed, Adam Mosseri, told TechCrunch Disrupt that while humans may have caught the fake news, the company is better for improving its algorithms in place of employees.

Local interests

Mosseri said Facebook's international audience (the majority of the company's 1.71 billion active users live outside the US) are better served by technology which caters to the individual.

Facebook is always tweaking its algorithms, but users may start to see more relevant trending topics in the coming months.
