Facebook update lets marketers target expats

Looking to reach some of Facebook's 1.2 billion users around the globe? Now you can more easily with an update allowing marketers to reach expats via targeted ads.

All abroad

Facebook announced the update is aimed at delivering more targeted content to the 92 million expat Facebook users.

"People living abroad use Facebook to connect with friends and family back home, sharing key life milestones and everyday moments alike.

"And expats aren’t just using Facebook to keep in touch with people. Brands, organisations, celebrities and news outlets also offer a vital connection to home," Facebook explained.

It's a wide world

When running an ad campaign, marketers are now able to target expats living in a certain country, and even users who originate from a specific nation.

For example, marketers can now target Indian users living in South Africa.

At present targeting of nationalities is limited to users from Brazil, Indonesia, China, India and South Africa.

Spread the word

Facebook says the feature has already yielded results. Etihad Airways used expat targeting to reach 27 million Hindus living abroad ahead of Diwali, one of the biggest holidays in the Hindu calendar.

Etihad reached over 500,000 Hindus using expat targeting, which resulted in 700 booking and a 50X return on investment.

Expat targeting is now available globally with all Facebook ads interfaces and the API.
