Facebook’s News Feed rewards Fast Websites

Consider yourselves forewarned: Facebook is cutting back on links to slow loading web pages.

Fast, better, stronger

Over the coming months, Facebook will be unveiling an update to News Feed allowing for faster linking to mobile-friendly web pages.

According to Facebook engineers Jiayi Wen and Shengbo Guo, 40% of users abandon a web page that takes over three seconds to load.

Wen and Guo envision a hierarchy of links within News Feed that will place quicker loading web pages to the top of the feed. This will be based on factors such as device, user connection speed, and general speed of the site.

Links vetted and prepped

In a process known as “prefetching,” Facebook will download mobile content ahead of time to hasten the speed for users with poor connections as much as 25%.

Facebook will also be launching helpful tips for sites to achieve and maintain stronger connection speeds, thereby generating a better user experience for all parties.

Have you ever been caught with poor connection speeds for a story? What’s the longest you’d wait? Give us your thoughts in the comment section below.
