Putting the social back into social media, WhatsApp has launched a raft of new features for Groups.
Group Think
First off, users can now add a description, which briefly outlines the group’s purpose, current topics, and guidelines. When a new member joins, this info will appear at the top of the chat.
Admins also get new powers, including the ability to control which members can alter information about the group such as icon, subject, and description.
It’s now easier to search for participants in a group. You can also catch up on messages that mention or you, or are addressed to you by tapping the new @ button in the chat window.
More is more
The move is part of Facebook’s push to get more users into groups across its vast properties. At last count, over 200 million users participate in groups. Facebook, ever modest, wants that figure to top 1 billion.
However Telegram remains one of the preferred apps when it comes group chats and payments. It also has the point of difference of not being owned by Facebook. Yet the numbers are striking: WhatsApp has 1.5 billion users, compared to Telegram’s 200 million.
Stay tuned to see which winds the groups will follow. The WhatsApp Group updates are now available on iOS and Android.
