Garmin 360 Director Mode

The folks at Garmin are enhancing the VIRB 360 camera’s editing capability. The new ‘Hyperframe Director Mode’ lets creators reframe their content.

Hyperframing

Hyperframe Director Mode lets a video artist create a clip and render a 1080p video out of a 360 video capture.

To do it, the director films their 360 video as per usual. Once they get their footage onto their desktop for editing, they can isolate any portion of the 360 video—picking a 2D selection from the 3D capture.

VIRB Edit update

The advanced functionality is introduced as a key component in the September 20 update to the desktop editing software that accompanies the 360 Camera.

The same update also included the ability to create new custom logo gauges by dragging images into the player view.

Hyping the over-capture competitor

We’re yet to have a hands-on with Garmin Hyperframing, but it looks very similar to the Over-Capture capability that GoPro launched a while ago.

That’s not to belittle the Garmin effort: keeping up with the competition on issues like this means they might outpace the competition elsewhere.

Garmin’s Hyperframing and GoPro’s Over-Capture both represent a significant advance in post-shoot refinement from the camera makers? Have you been lucky enough to work with one of both of them? How’s it working out so far?
