Google is trialling a new service that allows users to remove web ads, for a fee.
Cashing in
Contributor for Google launched in November and works by allowing users to pay websites to remove, or at least reduce, the number of ads they see.
Users pay between US$1 and US$3 per month for a (mostly) ad-free experience on websites including Mashable, Imgur and The Onion.
Profitable pop-up
Once the payment has been made, ads are replaced with a banner that thanks the user for being a contributor. Sort of like an ad pop-up blocker, but one that contributes to the content creator.
At the moment Contributor for Google is being tested with a small number of pilot partner websites. As content becomes increasingly monetised, it will be interesting to see if users are willing to shell out to go ad-free.
