PayPal.Me Squares off against Cashtags

PayPal has just launched PayPal.Me, a service that allows mobile peer-to-peer payments.

Cashed up

PayPal.Me gives users the ability to get paid through a customised URL.

To get started you create a URL link through your PayPal account, then when friends want to send you cash they simply go to your PayPal.Me page and transfer money via the URL.

PayPal says 50% of US users have outstanding small debts from friends and family – something PayPal.Me is seeking to redress.

Squaring off

Aside from its ostensibly noble intentions, PayPal.Me bears many similarities with Square's Cashtags, which launched earlier this year.

However Cashtags doesn’t require both payee and payer to have PayPal accounts. And it seems to charge slightly cheaper fees for transactions.

But with 169 million users in 190 countries (Cashtags is currently only available in the US), PayPal.Me will be available to a far larger global audience.

If you use another cash transfer service, let us know in the comments.
