Reddit launches proprietary Video Player

The self-proclaimed “front page of the internet” has launched its own native video player for direct upload.

Video goes in house

Reddit has been discussing plans to launch its own native video player for some time, and has finally made good on that promise.

Redditors will be able to upload up to 15 minutes of video at a data cap of 1 GB. The new player is available on desktop and mobile apps, and will play in the top corner as users continue to scroll.

But that’s not all, Reddit will also be launching a GIF-maker to be used in unison with their new player, proving the site is ready for the competition when it comes to creating original GIFs.

With great video comes…sponsors

Seeing as Reddit already has native video adverts, it’s entirely possible that sponsored videos could make their way into mid and pre-roll ads.

According to Variety, sub-reddit moderators will have the choice to opt out of video content in their forum, which will curtail some ad opportunities.

At the moment, the launch is really more of an extended beta available to only some communities with more to follow.
