Select and search with Google’s Now on Tap

If we knew you were reading this on an Android device, this is where we'd type out an obscure word and ask you to tell us its meaning.

Because with Google's latest Now on Tap update, definitions and other searches are only a click away, as is a new image search.

What's that word?

Introduced in May 2015 when Marshmallow (version 6.0) was unveiled, Now on Tap would previously effectively guess what you would be interested in, based on the content on the screen.

This month's update now allows users to select a specific word or phrase for Now on Tap to search with alacrity, meaning you're not that far away from discovering new meanings.

Alongside definitions of searched words will be links to a full Google search result, Google Images and the likes of Wikipedia.

Search by sight

With roots in Google.com's reverse image search and the Google Photos app's recognition technology, Now on Tap's image search function might just be more exciting.

Whether you're browsing your camera roll, the internet or even Instagram, Now on Tap will look to search for what it sees in an image, then serve up a name and links to related apps. For example Maps for a landmark, or YouTube for an album cover.

Travellers can also search for more information about landmarks directly from the camera app.

The update is available globally now, though as of its release definition searches are only available in English.
