Snapchat-style map coming to Facebook

Facebook has commenced preparations to bring an interactive real-time map to help users coordinate events and meetups.

Another crack at geotracking

Facebook is tackling a total redesign of its Nearby Friends platform and replacing the list view of stating member locations with a new map grouping friends together by city.

In the “quest to cure loneliness” services like Apple’s Find My Friends, Google Maps, Glympse, Foursquare, and Swarm have all struggled to capture user interest.

Snapchat is the only app to have successfully launched their own geo-live map when they acquired French app Zenly, allowing users to see where Stories have been recently uploaded.

Following suit

Facebook’s Nearby Friends service failed to stir real excitement, but soon a tap of the button will allow users to see a friend’s approximate location, though not exact coordinates, for privacy reasons.

According to Facebook, “People have complete control over whether to use Nearby Friends or not. They can turn it on in the Nearby Friends bookmark.”

Facebook has been battling a decline in unique daily users, and has yet to find a winning combination for keeping users informed on each other’s activities. Maybe the map will show them the way.
