WhatsApp woos Apple army, now encrypts for iCloud

WhatsApp has amped up security for its cloud-based backup service, shutting the door on potentially vulnerable communications.

WhatsApp locks down

Third party code-cracking service, Oxygen Forensics, recently boasted of their ability to gain access to iCloud accounts via SIM cards matching WhatsApp’s verification code generator.

WhatsApp has now made public that they quietly corrected the security risk in late 2016, making the recent announcement to quell Oxygen Forensics’ claim.

All iCloud backups of WhatsApp conversations are encrypted and stored via iCloud and only accessible via court subpoena.

FBI confirms encryption

Some may recall the FBI’s efforts last year to force Apple to lessen security measures for investigators trying to search locked iPhones, prompting a large debate over end-to-end encryptions.

WhatsApp has been firm in their policy to not provide user data. The only sure-fire solution is to simply not backup conversations at all which may inconvenience some users.

With sensitive discussions regarding user privacy as relevant as ever, the debate does not seem to be going away any time soon.
