With new character limit, Facebook ‘borrows’ from Twitter’s Playbook

Here’s one that’s slipped under the radar: Facebook has quietly adopted Twitter’s most iconic point-of-difference, the 140-character limit.

Well, sort of.

Speed limits apply

Facebook now limits posts to 130-characters to US users. We’re not sure why Facebook chose to shoot just under Twitter’s limit, but sometimes less is more.

Facebookers in the US are now presented with a series of coloured circles when composing a post. Clicking on these will limit you to 130 characters.

Video-first

The move comes as Facebook moves away from text-only posts in favour of video, especially Live and 360 clips.

There's been no official word from Facebook (or Twitter) about the change. And no indication of time limits for video at this stage.
