YouTube first to go live in 360 degrees

Will 2016 be the year we remember as the year that 360 immersive VR video goes mainstream?

With the unveiling of Live 360, YouTube is certainly doing everything they can to make it happen.

Stealing a march on Facebook

Over the past year, we’ve heard a lot about Facebook’s big plans for VR/360 video. Something of a Zuckerberg pet project, Facebook acquired Oculus VR for USD$2 billion and began rolling out 360-degree video support on Facebook.

Now, YouTube is looking to storm that space, beating Facebook to the punch not only with live 360 streaming, but what they claim is a cheap(er) to use 360-degree product, both from the consumer and the creator side of the picture.

Easier to immerse yourself…and others

For consumers, all you need to watch streaming VR vids via YouTube is to open the YouTube app on your device or load it up from the web and. That’s it. No specialised harware required.

For producers, YouTube claims that Live 360 will work with cameras as inexpensive as USD$350 at launch.

They will also release an API so that any interested hardware makers can get in on the act.
