YouTube is preparing to launch an ad-free subscription service.
YouPay
Bloomberg reports that YouTube's paid service will go live this year and cost US$10 per month.
The move would put Google's video giant into direct competition with streaming sites such as Netflix, which recently launched in Australia and New Zealand.
Video stars
Ahead of the shift YouTube sent a letter to content creators explaining that when a user pays a subscription and views their video, YouTube will pay them a percentage of the subscription fee. The amount is yet to be determined.
The move comes as YouTube continues to monetise, with the platform unveiling a music subscription service last November.
The question remains: how much will users pay to be ad-free?
We're betting more than a few of YouTube's 1 billion plus monthly users will be putting their hands up.
