Video sharing and SEO updates coming to Twitter

Twitter is reportedly adding more layers to its platform, in an attempt to please advertisers and become more profitable.

An in-house video hosting service, similar to its existing photo hosting service, will be an attempt to take the market share in short, quick videos away from popular choices Twitvid and YouTube.

Twitter has also been quietly updating its SEO tactics, allowing search engines to crawl content-based search results and launching a user profile directory.

Eyes on the prize

By allowing users to upload videos directly, Twitter will be able to keep users in its ecosystem, rather than having them click through to third party websites.

Last year Twitter challenged popular photo hosting services Twitpic and Yfrog with its own variant, hosting photos on pic.twitter.com and winning a large portion of market share.

The convenience of video uploads could also allow advertisers using Promoted Tweets to see a greater return, primarily through users who previously may have avoided clicking away from Twitter.

Visible search results

Outside updates to the platform itself, Twitter is improving its SEO results to become more visible when internet users search for a particular person or company.

Twitter is the most public social network on the internet, and opening up the user profile directory to search engines such as Google and Bing will take advantage of its SEO already in place.

In the face of competition from Google+, which is integrated into Google search results, Twitter's latest background update is another move in driving initial traffic to the platform.
