Telstra and Google have teamed up to launch the world’s first dedicated Android store. Opened last week in Melbourne, Androidland is designed to showcase the various ways Android, Google’s operating system for smartphones and tablets, can be used by consumers.
Everything under one roof
Until now, Android-enabled devices have been sold at third-party retailers. Androidland is designed to boost awareness of the platform by presenting a range of compatible smartphones and tablets from manufacturers including Samsung, HTC, Ericsson, Motorola and LG.
Androidland also features life-sized Android Robots, gaming kiosks and displays where customers can learn more about the platform.
The Apple approach
By bringing a range of Android-enabled devices together in an interactive environment, it is reported Telstra and Google are hoping to replicate the success of the popular Apple stores. While the store is currently being billed as a temporary space, if it proves popular other locations around Australia are like to follow.
Worldwide, Android is currently the most popular operating system on mobile devices, ahead of Blackberry and Apple.
