Meta’s New App “Edits” Takes On CapCut

Meta is making a calculated move into the video editing space with the upcoming launch of Edits, its new standalone app designed to rival ByteDance’s popular CapCut. While the timing coincides with ongoing uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s future in the US, Edits is shaping up to be far more than just a backup plan for creators looking for alternatives. With a release date set for March, Meta’s latest tool is positioning itself as a comprehensive, AI-powered creative suite that could significantly enhance how marketers and creators approach video content for Instagram and beyond.

What is Edits?

At its core, Edits is Meta’s answer to the growing demand for professional-grade mobile video editing tools. Built specifically with Instagram creators in mind, Edits is designed to support the production of high-quality Reels and other short-form content, offering both standard editing features and advanced AI-powered capabilities.

From launch, creators will have access to a robust set of tools including:

  • The ability to record video up to 10 minutes in length directly within the app
  • A playback timeline for more precise editing control
  • High-quality video recording features
  • Draft storage and collaboration tools
  • Detailed video analytics to assess performance
  • An inspiration hub highlighting trending audio and creative ideas

Unlike casual editing apps, Edits is clearly geared towards serious mobile creators who are looking for greater control, flexibility and innovation. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has been clear on this point, describing the app as “more for creators than casual video makers” and confirming that features like templates will not be part of the offering.

CapCut Looms Large With Creators

To understand why Meta is investing so heavily in Edits, it helps to consider the dominant role CapCut currently plays in the creator economy. Owned by TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, CapCut has become the editing app of choice for short-form video creators worldwide, thanks to its intuitive design, mobile-first interface, and powerful creative tools.

For marketers, CapCut offers a compelling balance of functionality and speed. Its popularity stems from features such as:

  • User-friendly templates designed around trending formats
  • Advanced editing capabilities including keyframe animations, transitions and overlays
  • Audio integration that syncs easily with popular tracks on TikTok and other platforms
  • AI-powered tools for automated captions, background removal, and stylistic effects

CapCut has become indispensable for brands looking to keep pace with fast-moving social trends, especially on TikTok, where agility and relevance are key to engagement. It allows marketers to produce polished, platform-native videos without the need for desktop software or professional editing experience.

However, CapCut’s more advanced features, particularly those powered by AI, often sit behind a paywall. For businesses operating at scale or creators producing frequent content, these recurring costs can add up. This is where Meta sees an opportunity. By providing a free, integrated alternative through Edits, Meta is not only seeking to win over creators but also to keep more of the creative process, and the associated data, within its own ecosystem.

AI at the Heart of Creativity

Where Edits begins to stand apart from existing options like CapCut is in its deep integration of AI. Meta has been steadily developing a suite of generative AI tools designed to take creativity to the next level, and Edits will act as the testing ground for many of these innovations.

Some of the AI-powered features teased so far include:

  • Animating still images, allowing creators to bring static content to life without needing to record new video footage
  • Dynamic special effects, with the potential to alter outfits, backgrounds or lighting with just a prompt
  • Simplified green screen tools for seamless background changes

Mosseri has suggested that creators will eventually be able to apply effects across individual clips or entire Reels, providing a level of customisation that typically requires professional desktop software. These AI tools could prove particularly valuable for marketers and brands looking to scale content production while maintaining high creative standards.

Why Now?

The timing of Edits’ release is far from accidental. With ongoing legal challenges facing TikTok in the US and CapCut’s future hanging in the balance, Meta is seizing the opportunity to offer creators a stable, feature-rich alternative. While CapCut remains popular worldwide, it operates on a freemium model with certain premium AI features locked behind a paywall. In contrast, Edits is expected to provide its full suite of features for free, at least initially, giving it a clear competitive advantage.

This mirrors Meta’s previous strategic responses to market shifts. When TikTok was banned in India, Instagram Reels quickly filled the void. When Twitter (now X) began to falter, Threads entered the scene. Edits follows the same playbook, aimed at capitalising on gaps left by rivals while strengthening Meta’s own ecosystem.

What Marketers Should Expect

For digital marketers, Edits presents a fresh opportunity to enhance video content strategies on Instagram. As Meta continues to prioritise Reels in its algorithm and push short-form video as a key engagement driver, having a dedicated, high-quality editing app that feeds directly into Instagram’s ecosystem could streamline production workflows and improve creative output.

Moreover, with Edits serving as a testing ground for new features, marketers who adopt the app early may gain first access to tools that later make their way into the core Instagram app. This could provide an edge in keeping content fresh, on-trend and engaging.

Edits is set to launch its initial version in March for iOS, with an Android release to follow. While Mosseri has cautioned that the first release will be incomplete, the roadmap ahead looks promising. Meta’s focus on empowering creators with sophisticated, free tools combined with its commitment to ongoing development makes Edits a platform worth watching.

Whether or not CapCut remains available to US users, Edits is likely to earn its place as an essential app for creators and marketers serious about short-form video. If you’re looking to stay ahead in Instagram marketing, it might be time to clear some space on your phone.
