And now for the tweather

While Australians took the day off to mark another national birthday, there was no break on Twitter as #australiaday, #hottest100 and #ausopen hashtags swarmed faster than blowies on a barbie.

The week started off sedately enough, with tweeters from around the globe divulging personal quirks in the #30thingsaboutme hashtag. Revelations included ladder phobias, favourite movies and one tweeter's undying love for chicken nuggets.

Speaking of nuggets, McDonald’s found itself in a McFlurry of damage control after an online campaign went viral in a way the fast food chain wasn't anticipating. The #McDStories hashtag, meant to highlight the contributions of McDonald’s workers, was instead hijacked by tweeters who used the hashtag to vent their displeasure. Some of the responses questioned the brand's commitment to animal welfare, sustainability and worker welfare issues.

In the build up to Australia Day #hottest100 pumped up the online volume, and while the Prime Minister @JuliaGillard may have taken a tumble in real life, her online exposure kicked a goal.
