Despite Android continuing to close the gap, a new report reveals Apple still dominates overall mobile ad revenue.
Like them Apples
According to a recent study by Opera Mediaworks, Android accounted for 62.69% of mobile ad traffic in 2014, compared to 27.18% for iOS.
However iOS was more profitable, netting 51.67% of mobile revenue, ahead of Android on 41.20%.
Mobile movers
All that heavy lifting wasn't just due to the iPhone. Apple's iPad was responsible for 13% of Apple's revenue, despite accounting for less than 5% of overall traffic.
It's also worth noting the iPod Touch amassed more revenue than BlackBerry and the Windows Phone combined.
The jury's out on how the newly released Apple Watch will perform.
Takeaways
Opera Mediaworks speculates that despite Android's larger market penetration, it's being largely driven in emerging markets.
Apple's success is due to its dominance in developed countries, while the large screen on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have made users more accepting of rich media ad and video campaigns.
Worth keeping in mind when considering your next mobile campaign: Android has more reach, but Apple seems to have better ROI potential.
