We here at SMK love a good set of juicy social stats, especially when they relate to Australian audiences
So it was with some fanfare that we tucked into the Social Pulse's recent Australian Facebook Performance Report.
Stat attack
The report analysed data from January 1 to June 1 this year to gain an overall snapshot into what's hot on Facebook in Australia.
Top of the Pops
Apparently Australians love a mix of bananas, national pride, and cooking on Facebook.
The Australia.com Facebook Page remains the most popular Brand Page in the nation, with over 5.7 million fans.
In second place are perennial favourites Bananas in Pyjamas (2.9m fans), Hamish & Andy (2.1m fans) and MasterChef Australia (1.3m fans).
Engagement excellence
Radio may not be cutting edge technology, but it does have the edge when it comes to starting conversations on social.
Fox FM radio hosts Fifi and Dave have the country's most engaged Facebook Brand Page, followed by Australia.com.
The next three most popular pages are Fox FM, 2Day FM and SAFM.
Industry leaders
When it comes to the industries most popular with Facebook users, TV shows lead the pack.
Second place goes to Airlines, Travel and Tourism, followed by FMCG – Snackfoods and Retail – Fashion.
In contrast, Newspapers and Magazines saw the biggest fan growth.
Political bent
In politics, we're pretty evenly split on Facebook.
Tony Abbott is the politician with the most fans (286, 939), followed by Julia Gillard (217,762).
The next three spots are taken up by the Liberal Party of Australia (209,246), the Australian Labor Party (191,450), and Kevin Rudd (137,432).
Sporty on social
Australians are a sports mad lot, and on Facebook rugby rules the roost.
The Queensland Maroons have the biggest following, with over 654,000 fans.
Making up the top five are NSW Blues (501,000 fans), Brisbane Broncos (460312 fans), Qantas Wallabies (349,135 fans) and the Socceroos (341,629 fans).
