Bit.ly might be known primarily as a link-shortening service, but dig a little deeper and there’s gold in them there URLs.
Short and sweet
Bit.ly has begun rolling out its Audience Data tool, which reveals some fascinating stats behind the 8 billion Bitlinks it creates every month.
While Bit.ly has an existing analytics tool, Audience Data delves deeper to reveal metricS including data on unique users and clicks-per-users.
Bit.ly is also developing a way to retarget users who click on a brand’s link.
Bit by bit
The update is interesting because it potentially gives brands a new window into user behaviour. Bit.ly users are broadly divided into three equally sized segments: anonymous users, those with registered accounts, and brands.
Of Bit.ly’ 8 billion monthly Bitlinks, half are used on Facebook, while 20 per cent of all links on Twitter come courtesy of Bit.ly.
If brands can gain further insights into what makes theses users click, Bit.ly might provide a fresh point of view when it comes to social metrics.
