Microsoft is making a somewhat unexpected move to re-position Skype as a content creation tool.
What now?
Yes, Skype is still mainly about the chat, but a new blog post from ‘The Skype Team’ is selling it as a convenient way to create and capture content.
Now or soon, new features and third-party tools will make it simpler for creators to integrate chat sessions into their online content.
This is actually a consumer-level adaptation of Skype TX. That project was an enterprise tool that simplified the way Skype could be streamed directly into professional broadcasts.
The most famous example of its usage, perhaps, would be BBC News and their interview with an expert which was interrupted by a strutting child.
For the future
There are a few signs that Microsoft believes the ‘Skype for Content Creators’ concept will have some legs.
For starters, it’s got its own landing page, where they sell it as a way to integrate calls into ‘podcasts, vlogs and livestreams at the flick of a switch.’
There’s also a publicly available email address: sfcc@microsoft.com. If you’ve got specific queries about how it’s all going to unfold, that might be the most suitable contact point.
Will this be good for the Skype brand, or is it just another diversion after the failed foray into Instagram’s territory?
