Facebook ‘accidentally’ launches Snapchat rival

Back in May we reported that Facebook was working on a Snapchat rival called Slingshot. Now it appears Facebook has launched Slingshot – by accident.

Slings and arrows

Earlier this week rumours started spreading that Facebook had launched Slingshot for iPhone is several countries.

The app was quickly withdrawn, but not before a number of sites including Tech Crunch had taken screen shots that included information about how Slingshot works.

Snap it up

Apparently much like Snapchat – allowing users to share photos and videos, in addition to features that allow “reaction” shots to be send immediately.

“Slingshot lets you quickly share moments —little and big— with all your friends. Shoot a photo or video of what you’re up to and sling it to a bunch of people.

“They won’t be able to see your shot until they sling something back. Tap on a shot to react, or simply swipe it away,” the Slingshot brief explains.

Mobile monolith

Facebook released a statement admitting the app, which is still in testing, had been released in error. No official launch date was mentioned.

After Snapchat refused Facebook's US$3 billion buyout offer last year, Facebook responded by acquiring Snapchat rival WhatsApp for US$20 billion.

However Facebook continues to struggle with the lucrative teen market – something Slingshot may address when it's eventually, and officially, released.
