Facebook opens private posts to broadcasters

It's not enough to be the largest social media platform on the planet by a factor of five, Facebook wants to be be the eader in every aspect of its users social lives.

While Twitter has long been the place for news online, Facebook's latest update sees the platform moving firmly into the trending news category.

All the news that's fit to post

Facebook's latest API allows media organisations such as CNN and NBC to search and view users' public posts.

The API also gives broadcasters access to keyword mentions and demographics about users including age, gender and location about.

“Starting today, selected news organizations can begin to integrate Facebook conversations into their broadcasts or coverage by displaying public posts of real-time activity about any given topic.

“For example, CNN’s New Day can now easily incorporate what people on Facebook have to say about the latest, breaking news event during their show,” wrote Justin Osofsky, VP, Media Partnerships and Online Operations.

Brands aren't forgotten either. Marketers and agencies are soon expected to gain access to this trending data.

Media is big news on Facebook. Last week's inaugural NFL match for the 2013 season generated 20 million Likes, comments and shares.

The update comes as Facebook moves more into real time and trending topics, two spaces traditionally dominated by Twitter. If Facebook can make this latest API work it may put a serious dent in Twitter's TV plans.

Plus, all that exposure on network television won't hurt either.
