First there was Meerkat, then there was Periscope. Now Facebook has stepped into the live video streaming ring.
The only caveat: you have to be famous to use it.
Facebook's 15 minutes
Facebook announced its video streaming feature, dubbed Live, in a blog post.
"Today, we’re excited to introduce Live, a new way for public figures to share live video from Mentions with their fans on Facebook.
"With Live, public figures can take fans behind the scenes, host a Q&A, share announcements, and more — all in real time."
Keeping it real in real time
Facebook promises the rich and famous can use Live to grow and engage their fan base, interact directly with fans and other public figures, and publish streams that can be viewed later.
For the rest of us, we're able to comment on and share Live streams.
If you're curious to see what celebs are up to, early adopters of Live include Dwayne The Rock Johnson, Serena Williams, Martha Stewart and Michael Bublé.
Celeb snapshot
Facebook says 900 million people are connected to public figures on Facebook.
That's a lot of potential Live viewers that may be drawn away from Meerkat and Twitter-owned Periscope.
At this stage Facebook is keeping tight-lipped whether Live will one day be available to the rest of us. But don't be surprised is something similar pops up on Messenger or Instagram.
