Facebook has tweaked its News Feed to give greater weighting to posts with rich content like photos and videos.
Moving pictures
Facebook announced the change in a blog post, explaining that while users were more likely to respond to text-only updates from friends, they engaged with richer content from brand Pages.
“We are learning that posts from Pages behave differently to posts from friends and we are working to improve our ranking algorithms so that we do a better job of differentiating between the two types. This will help us show people more content they want to see.
“Page admins can expect a decrease in the distribution of their text status updates, but they may see some increases in engagement and distribution for other story types,” wrote Facebook news feed ranking product manager Chris Turitzi.
Link love
Facebook went on to explain that posts with embedded links, that is, those displaying an image or video with a link, attract more engagement.
The update is an important one for Page admins looking to gain more reach in the increasingly crowded Facebook News Feed, without having to pay to for the privilege.
