Facebook vs Twitter vs YouTube

We take a look at some statistics from web information company Alexa to discover where each of the three websites sit in the global internet food chain.

Millions of users

The latest estimates by Social Media News put Facebook at over 11.5 million Australian users, with YouTube just trailing at 11 million, while Twitter is estimated to have a little over 2 million Aussies signed up.

Local look

Australian internet users account for 1.3 per cent of global visitors to Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. Respectively, they are the second, fourth and eleventh most popular websites in the country.

Global reach

Facebook has accounted for just over 7 per cent of global page views, with YouTube hovering around 4 per cent. Twitter covers just 0.5 per cent.

Facebook reaches almost 45 per cent of internet users, YouTube reaches around 30 per cent and Twitter reaches slightly under 10 per cent.

Finding content

10.8 per cent of YouTube visits originate from search engines, double the amount of Facebook (4.8 per cent) and Twitter (4.7 per cent).

Lengthy stay

Facebook leads the way in average daily page views per user with almost 16 views, while YouTube averages 12.6 views. Twitter averages a comparatively smaller 6.4 page views.

Almost a third of all users who visit the three websites only view a single page, with YouTube heading the pack at 30.9 per cent, compared to Twitter’s 28.5 per cent and Facebook’s 23.2 per cent.

However despite these numbers, users are spending more time on Facebook (an average of 25 minutes, 36 seconds) than they are on YouTube (18 minutes, 8 seconds) and Twitter (9 minutes 13 seconds).
