Newly launched mobile application Gather allows users to create “disposable” micro-meetups which can be quickly broadcast to Facebook and Twitter. The app is intended to serve as a lightweight tool to help users share their intended plans ahead of their Facebook or Foursquare check-in.
The main benefit to using Gather, instead of posting directly to the social networks themselves, is its ability to centralise friends’ plans so that users don’t have to keep checking and scouring Facebook and Twitter for updates and news on activities.
With Gather, users get a push notification when one of their friends are doing something fun nearby.
Creation
Gather was created by developers Mikeal Rogers (Yammer, CouchOne, Mozilla) and Max Ogden (open Web, Code for America). Rogers told TechCrunch the pair originally set out to code an “achievement engine for the real world,” before switching gears and focusing on creating a meet-up tool for Facebook and Twitter.
Lightweight
Rogers was also quick to clarify that Gather was not designed to compete with more robust event platforms such as Eventbrite, Meetup and Cvent.
“Those have a lot of infrastructure behind them. We don’t even require an end time for an event. You just put in a start time, a place from Foursquare, and a name for it, and you’re ready to go. We really wanted to be much more lightweight. What a tweet is to blogging, we are to Meetup.com.”
Gather is currently working to add Foursquare check-in support calendar integration, and expanded Android platform support.
