Internet juggernaut Google is continuing to expand its search function across all areas of the web, this week announcing on their blog that they would be adding Google Drive to its search capabilities.
Upgrading the search
After running a trial with Gmail, where a selected number of users could use the standard Google search bar to not only search the web but also include results from the user’s email account, Google have expanded this search experience to its document storage function Drive.
Users wanting to access this function must be signed into their Google account, and may then search the web, their Drive and Gmail accounts at the same time.
Privacy settings
The service is opt-in and users need not fear any breaches of privacy as results will only be shown in the user's private account and only accessed when the user is logged in.
Users can also click an icon that “hides” personalised results, if they aren’t interested in seeing Gmail or Drive search results.
The experience is building towards Google’s search results becoming more personalised, both as a way to give advertisers more targeted users and to keep one step ahead of Facebook, which recently announced it was looking into search.
