Instagram is making a move toward real-time communication, as programmers have discovered telling code hidden deep within the company’s Android Application Packages.
Lookout Messenger and Skype
As the tug-of-war continues between Snapchat and Instagram, it seems the latter is determined to move beyond cloning each other’s features and offer Direct message voice and video calling.
It has been speculated for some time that Instagram could have such a project in the works, though the platform has declined to comment.
However, the smoking gun would appear to be button icons snuck into the current APK, which is publicly available.
Leveling up
Adding visual communication may be the big push that gives Instagram wider global appeal than its top competitor. More users communicating could easily spill into more feed and Stories exposure.
With Instagram already serving as a snapshot into the lives of friends, following weekly highlights and adventures, the ability to reach out and chat becomes that much easier.
Instagram has become infamous for keeping mum when nearing a launch, and their silence at the moment all but confirms the new calling feature. Time will tell, but this could be a big one.
Would you be inclined to call over Instagram? What do you think this means for Snapchat? Let us know in our comments.
