Instagram is moving even closer to moving pictures with the release of new stand alone app Hyperlapse.
Time-lapse
Hyperlapse allows users to create create high quality time-lapse videos, even when the user is moving. Previously this was only achievable with sophisticated camera equipment.
“Traditionally, time lapse videos depend on holding your phone or camera still while you film. Hyperlapse from Instagram features built-in stabilization technology that lets you create moving, handheld time lapses that result in a cinematic look, quality and feel,” Instagram explained in a blog post.
Instagram released this video showing how the app works.
Video 1 Up
Using Hyperlapse is straightforward. Users simply tap once to begin recording video, then tap again to stop.
You then select a playback speed (between 1x and 12x) and save the video to the camera roll.
Once your time-lapse is created it can be directly shared on Instagram.
Victory over Vine?
Hyperlapse is a direct challenge to Vine, Twitter's video service that has long mastered the six second looping video.
While Hyperlapse will no doubt be responsible for a variety of user videos, it will be interesting to see how brands use the app. Two suggestions that spring to mind: activations and live events.
