Instagram has announced it has now has 200 million users, with no signs of slowing.
200 million reasons to Like
Instagram announced the milestone in a blog post.
“From documenting a passion for jazz to the protests in Kiev, we’re continually surprised and humbled by the moments you share.
“As we exceed 20 billion photos shared on Instagram to date, we look back in wonder at the beauty and importance of everything this community has created,” Instagram wrote.
Facebook success story
It's been almost two years since Facebook bought Instagram in a controversial deal worth US$1 billion.
That seems a drop in the ocean compared to the US$21 billion Facebook recently paid to buy WhatsApp, and considering Instagram's growth the sum looks like a bargain.
Over the past two years Instagram has grown sixfold, adding 50 million in the last six months alone.
Twitter threat?
The figures will be worrying for Twitter, which has an estimated 240 million users but is struggling to attract new users.
Instagram now has 35 million active monthly users, ahead of Twitter's 30.8 million.
And with Facebook's recent acquisition of WhatsApp, it's looking like an increasingly one-side battle when it comes to ruling the mobile and photo social space.
