Lincoln trailer debuts on Google+, hosted by Steven Spielberg

Hollywood is the latest big business using Google+ to reach consumers, with the trailer for Steven Spielberg directed movie Lincoln debuting in a Google+ Hangout last week.

Hanging with Lincoln

The hangout, hosted by Spielberg and cast member Joseph Gordon-Levitt, was sponsored by Google Play (formally the Android Market) and also broadcast on the ABC America SuperSign in Times Square, New York City.

Fans needed to RSVP to the Hangout to watch it live, and those wanting to participate in the discussion were required to submit a YouTube video stating their interest in the film and questions.

Studio savvy

This premier sees the platform extending beyond its friend-based chat function, with a number of other movie studios choosing to promote teaser trainers on Google+, including Disney's The Muppets Movie and The Avengers.

What also makes the Lincoln premier unique is the integration of the trailer release alongside the chat. This live chat element has been used previously by studios, through primarily via Facebook.

Mashable recently speculated that the success of this Hangout could lead to more investment in Google and Google+; potentially cutting into marketing budgets traditionally earmarked for Facebook and Twitter.

The new webinar?

Google+’s Hangout function has the potential to work for small to medium businesses who are looking to connect, in real time, to an engaged audience.

The ability to host live discussions and receive feedback could prove to be not only an excellent customer service and market research tool, but also a cost effective option for brands.
