LinkedIn Endorsements, a way for users to recommend other professional's skills, has passed the 1 billion mark.
You scratch my back
LinkedIn launched the service five months ago, and since then 58 million members have been endorsed for their skills and expertise.
LinkedIn's associate product manager Peter Rusev announced the milestone in a blog post this week.
“Skill endorsements are a great way to help build your professional brand, in fact you're four times more likely to be viewed on LinkedIn if you've been endorsed,” wrote Rusev.
Linking In
The announcement was accompanied with an infographic that showed how Endorsements were being used.
The first ever Endorsement was for C++ (the programming language), while the billionth Endorsement was at the other end of the scale: Water Treatment.
The most popular Endorsements are Strategic Planning, Customer Service and Microsoft Office, with Social Media coming in at number 10.
Engagement
Over the past year LinkedIn has been looking to build up the engagement of its community, and it seems Endorsements have been a runaway success.
Before Endorsements, LinkedIn users could only recommend the skills of others through testimonials, which took longer to complete.
By streamlining the process LinkedIn has made it easier for its users to help, and be helped by one another. It also makes it easier to find professionals who are experts in a variety of fields.
Not only does this boost engagement, it keeps users on the site for longer – perhaps long enough to view a few LinkedIn ads.
