We’ve previously reported that Drive File Stream was being tested with some of G Suite’s early adopter crowd. Well, apparently the beta went well. Now, Google has taken it to global launch stage.
New cloud streamers
With Drive on the way out, G Suite customers should be on ‘Drive File Stream’ by the end of September 2017. Meanwhile, non-G Suite users will be nudged to migrate to the new ‘Backup and Sync’ app.
Whichever one is going to be your solution going forward, you can find the right new link for you at the old Drive download page.
Google’s most recent announcement on the subject confirms that Drive is done for and finally sets the date of its demise.
Drive File Stream dates and data
Drive File Stream is generally available to G Suite users as of 26 September, but admins have been granted an advanced access to get everything right in advance.
The ‘Settings’ for Drive File Stream have been accessible via the admin console since 9 September 2017.
When Drive dies
Google Drive for Mac/PC will stop working on 12 March 2018
Even before that, Google will discontinue official support for the Drive service. Support for Google Drive (on both Mac and PC) will officially end on 11 December 2017.
Is the increased differentiation between Google’s free and enterprise solutions likely to impact on your selection of a cloud sync service?
