Mercedes-Benz USA has announced plans to integrate Facebook, Google and Yelp into vehicles' computer systems from 2013.
Cars get smart and social
Cars having been getting progressively smarter over the years, with some high-end models coming with automated parking and even night vision with pedestrian recognition. Now it seems they're getting social too.
An in-vehicle telematics system in the new Mercedes lets occupants check in via Facebook, update their status and see if friends are nearby via the car’s GPS screen.
The inclusion of Yelp indicates that restaurant and café recommendations based on location may be in the works too.
Mobile integration
This is potentially a giant leap for social media integration.
While location-based platforms such as Foursquare and Yelp are increasingly popular on computers, tablets and mobile devices, it may not be long we're checking in directly from our (actual) dashboards.
Mercedes USA has an engaged social media presence with active Facebook, Twitter and Google+ pages.
Australian release
Mercedes Australia is not commenting on whether the integrated vehicles will be released in Australia, and how they will fit in with existing traffic laws.
It’s also yet to be confirmed whether you’ll be able to ‘Like’ BMW from your social-media-equipped Merc.
