After months of testing and speculation of an imminent Australian release, Facebook has announced that it will no longer be launching Facebook Deals, its nascent daily deals project. The social networking giant, who has been trialling Deals as a competitor to sites such as Groupon, gave no immediate reason for its decision, though confirmed it would continue to roll-out Check In Deals in Australia.
Check In Deals, Facebook’s response to Foursquare, is a service that allows users to check in, flagging a brand’s Facebook page via a smartphone and unlock special deals and offers. Launched in early August, local businesses currently featured include Commonwealth Bank, 7-11, Westfield and KFC.
With the recent announcement that Australia now has the highest percentage of smartphone ownership of any country in the world, Check In Deals offers local retailers a new opportunity to generate brand awareness and increase in-store, repeat traffic.
