Number Crunch: Facebook 2016

As 2016 slowly kicks into gear, it seems fitting to take a squiz look at the biggest kid on the block – Facebook.

With 2015 delivering record profits and an expanded reach of the social network, what’s in store for the next 12 months?

Read on to find out where Zuckerberg and co. might be taking us.

Numbers game

Facebook now has over 1.55 billion users, and close to three-quarters of online adults visit Facebook at least once a month.

The average Facebook user has 250 friends and spends 20 minutes every day on the network.

Time swap

It’s been a long time since Facebook was the playground of college students.

While millennials remain the largest user group (91% are on Facebook), the social network has successfully crossed age groups, and is big with the 65+ user segment.

In fact, 83% of parents are friends with their teenager son or daughter on Facebook.

Mobile monolith

It’s pretty clear Facebook has successfully pivoted towards mobile.

Aside from its 900 million mobile users, Facebook also owns an impressive portfolio of mobile properties.

Tthese include Instagram (400 million users), WhatsApp (900 million users) and Messenger (800 million users).

Video

Video was huge on Facebook in 2015, and looks like getting even bigger this year.

Video views in the News Feed doubled from 4 billion to 8 billion last year, and expect this number to increase in 2016.

Facebook has also begun dabbling in live-streaming, and don’t forget it snapped up Oculus Rift.

Prepare for Virtual Reality videos coming to the News Feed in the not-too-distant future.

Global player

While Facebook is available in hundreds of countries, it remains most popular in Canada.
