Live streaming is so hot right now. While Facebook has been throwing its considerable weight into the game – Periscope was one of the first.
Read on to find out more about the plucky live streaming video app.
Friends in high places
Periscope was developed by friends Kayvon Beykpour and Joe Berstein. The pair came up with the idea after traveling to Turkey in 2013, when riots broke out in Istanbul.
Beykpour scanned Twitter for breaking images and video of the riots, and found little relevant content.
Periscope officially launched as Bounty in 2014, before being acquired by Twitter a year later. Reports say Twitter paid between US$50 million and US$100 million for the app.
Live it up
Periscope now has 10 million users, and 2 million Daily Active Users.
Currently, over 350,000 hours of live video is streamed every day.
Global reach
Periscope is popular around the globe, with the app available in 25 languages.
Interestingly, 30% of Periscope URLs are posted by women.
Brands time
Periscope is gradually being embraced by brands. Over 15% of the top brands on Twitter now regularly post on Periscope.
Celebrity fans include Ringo Starr, Roger Federer, and Jamie Oliver.
