Number Crunch: Tumblr

Tumblr is often overlooked when it comes to social superstars like Facebook and Instagram, though there's more than meets the eye when it comes to this unassuming platform.

Part blog, part photo-sharing platform, Tumblr is arguably the most popular place for the lucrative teen and early 20s market. Today we take a closer look at Tumblr, thanks to new figures from Digital Marketing Ramblings

Teenage riot

It's not coincidence that Apple chose Tumblr to pop its social cherry in March this year.

Over half (56 per cent) of Tumblr users in the US are under 34, and the numbers are growing.

Facebook on the other hand is facing the problem of teens fleeing as older users sign up in droves.

A virtual army

Launched in 2007, Tumblr now sees 120,000 new signups every day.

At last count there were over 168 million Tumblr blogs covering everything from existential Garfield to ugly Renaissance babies.

The most popular Tumblr blog is Reasons My Son is Crying, while the White House recently launched its official Tumblr page

Active

Tumblr's are an active lot, generated of 113 million posts per day (and over 74 billion overall).

Tumblr also attracts 69 million monthly visitors who account for over 5 billion monthly page views.

Young at heart

While over half of Tumblr's US users are teenagers, a further 61 per cent of US teens cite Tumblr as their social network of choice.

Tumblr users are often on-the-go. Over half of all Tumblr users access the platform via a mobile device, while Tumblr's mobile engagement grew a staggering 251 per cent from 2012 to 2013.

Yahoo

In May last year Yahoo liked Tumblr enough to buy the platform from 26 year old founder David Karp for the tidy sum of US$1.1 billion.
