While Facebook might be slowly closing in on the location game, Yelp's been doing it longer than most.
Today we're taking a closer look at the plucky geo-location app and social network.
Yelp all about it
Yelp was founded in 2004 by former PayPal employees Jeremy Stoppelman and Russel Simmons.
The pair first came up with the idea after Stoppelman caught a cold, and had trouble finding recommendations for a good doctor.
They pair settled on the term Yelp as a shortening of Yellow Pages.
Check in
Today Yelp now has 142 million monthly unique visitors.
The split between desktop and mobile is fairly even: 75 million are desktop, 66 million are mobile.
New reviews
To date Yelpers have created over 100 million reviews on the site. Over 70% of these come from mobile.
Yelp also gives directions over 200,000 times a day.
Business savvy
Yelp isn't just for users checking in with their friends. There are currently over 2 million businesses registered on Yelp, and over 100,000 advertisers.
At any given time there's 80,000 live deals on Yelp.
