As Pinterest continues its steady growth towards social stardom, the social network has introduced a slew of new user-requested personal settings.
Users in control
Users will now have the ability to block other individuals, as well as report others for offensive content, some of which is banned from the website.
Some of the options for reporting a user are nudity, personal attacks, graphic violence, hateful speech or symbols, self-harm promotion and spam.
Work in progress
In an official blog post announcing the changes, Dannie Chu, a Software Engineer at Pinterest, said the team are continuing to work on improvements throughout the network.
“We care about control because we understand it helps personalise your experience on Pinterest,” Chu said.
Among the security updates, Pinterest have also added a number of new email preferences, giving users the ability to be notified when new pins are added to particular boards.
Feedback frenzy
Although the new features bring the network up to speed, one user commented on the post and raised the concern that any public pins and boards will still be visible to blocked users who aren’t logged in.
Some users also praised Pinteresting for their quickness in removing offensive content, something that is always troubling social media.
Reddit has come under fire recently for allowing its users too much freedom, which lead to a drawn-out saga culminating in an infamous troll's identity being released.
Although implementing user requested features isn’t something new, it will only benefit the network if Pinterest continues to show they are listening.
The block and report features will be available to all users on the website over the next week, while it will come to Pinterest's mobile apps in the next updates.
