Pinterest pips email for social sharing

Pinterest has just passed email when it comes to online sharing.

According to stats from Share This, in the final quarter of 2013 Pinterest was the third most popular channel for consumers to share content.

And consumers are sharing more content across the board. Content was shared 37 per cent more often than in 2012, while engagement rose 12.6 per cent.

No growing pains

Aside from enjoying high user engagement, Pinterest continues to expand at a frenetic rate.

Pinterest grew by 58 per cent last year, making it the fastest growing social network, ahead of Facebook and LinkedIn.

By comparison, email declined by 11 per cent.

Women sharing more than men

Women were most likely to share content, and accounted for 57.6 per cent of Pinterest users, and 56 per cent of total social shares.

Interestingly, Share This also found that users were most likely to share content 8pm and 9pm.

Pinterest has recently added features like Business Pages, which hint at future moves towards monetisation.

If Pinterest can successfully leverage the engagement of its users into conversions, it might prove a very profitable (and pretty) way for brands to boost their bottom line.
