A new report reveals that mobile shopping is booming in Australia – with plenty of room left to grow.
Mobile millions
The Mobile nation: Opportunities and strategies for retail report from Deloitte Access Economics found that in 2014 Australians spent $16 billion online, with over a quarter of these purchases made on a mobile device.
The surge in smartphone spending is attributed to the upswing. Back in 2012 just 9.5% of Australians made a purchase from a smartphone. A year later that figure doubled to 19%.
More room to grow
Australian shoppers continue to combine mobile shopping with the real thing.
The study revealed that almost half of smartphone users visited a bricks and mortar store after searching products on their phone. Yet traditional retail still accounts for $238 billion in annual sales.
Moving on up
Deloitte speculates this means there's still plenty of room for retailers to leverage their mobile commerce offering.
The study used the example of daily deal website The Catch Group, which now processes 70% of its sales from mobile devices and apps after tweaking its website for mobile users.
