Social Gifting: Its all in the way you Wrapp It

Launched in November 2011, social gifting service Wrapp has seen 2.4 million free and paid gift cards given across 7 different countries. Wrapp made Australia the eighth country to receive the digital service launching on our shores last week.

What is social gifting?

Wrapp allows account holders to give gift cards from 16 participating Australian retailers to any of their Facebook friends. The receiver will be notified either by e-mail, text or Facebook; the choice is up to the giver. If the receiver elects to do so, they can display their gift on their Facebook profile, giving mutual friends 7 days to contribute to the amount on the gift card. A number of free gift cards are made available by certain retailers daily; the number available is capped at a certain amount each day and retailers are only charged if they are successfully redeemed.

A leap into the future

Wrapp is a purely digital platform. There is no option to print the gift cards; they must either be redeemed online or shown in store via a smartphone app. To sign up for a Wrapp account a Facebook profile is required.

Where has Wrapp come from?

Based in Stockholm Wrapp has an impressive team behind it including entrepreneurs known for working with Spotify and H & M, and the same backers that are behind Skype and LinkedIn.  Australia marks the eighth country the digital service has branched out into with plans to launch in a number of other countries in the near future. Currently there are 16 retailers involved here including online-based businesses such as BrandsExclusive and well known retailers such as Lorna Jane and Ben Sherman.

Wrapping it all up

Wrapp promotes a form of peer-to-peer marketing. As gifts are received and displayed on Facebook it generates a story for participating retailers creating an inexpensive and direct form of advertising, promoting the idea of giving to others.
