Three ways to win at Tumblr

Tumblr is sometimes dismissed as the playground of teens taking photos, but brands would be well advised to keep in mind a few facts about the platform.

Tumblr has 170 million monthly active users and is one of the top 10 websites in the US. It was also recently purchased by Yahoo who is reportedly sinking lots of capital into making sure Tumblr keeps up with the Joneses.

Keeping this in mind, we've put together three quick ways brands can get more out of Tumblr. 

Engagement over size

Size doesn't always matter. More than other networks, Tumblr is based on the principal of users discovering and hopefully sharing good content. In fact, 60 per cent of content on Tumblr consists of reblogs. 

If you're posting quality content that's resonating with fans, your audience size will grow organically. The shelf life of posts on Tumblr is fairly healthy too, 28 per cent of reblogs are generated from content that's over 28 days old.

Make it bright and shiny

Just like Pinterest and Instagram, Tumblr is based around images. However Tumblr as an advantage in allowing users more leeway to make posts attractive.

Instead of just an image, why not deliver a custom themed image or GIF? People like bright shiny things. Give them what they want, and they will come. 

Connect

Tumblr is a community, which means if you're going to be active you should join conversations.

Find and connect with influential Tumblr users who are interested in similar things. See what's working for them and apply these lessons to your own content. 

By reaching out you'll also increase the likelihood of your content being reblogged, and by extension reaching new audiences.
