Three ways to win using #hashtags

We all know and love hashtags, but how many of us are using them strategically in business?

While there's no doubt hashtags have the power the amplify content, having a sound strategy about when (and when not to) employ the ubiquitous symbol can be prudent.

Here are three things to consider before hashtagging it up.

1. Less is more

Hashtags should be the cherry on top of your post, not the cake.

Studies indicate hashtags placed towards the end of posts get better engagement, as do ones that are simple and easy to remember. 

Also, tailor your hashtag to the platform. Twitter is a fertile ground for hashtags, while Facebook is less so.

On the other hand, Instagram users seem comfortable with multiple hashtags at the end of posts. 

2. The Event

Live events, such as conferences and seminars, are one of the best ways to get more bang from your hashtag buck.

These days any self-respecting event will have its own hashtag, allowing you to virtually meet with other attendees and speed up your networking.

And just because you're not there doesn't mean you can't jump on board – if an event is taking place that's aligned with your business be sure to join in the conversation and snag yourself some new contacts!

3. Do your research

Hashtags constantly trend, and it's worthwhile keeping on top of what's popular right now. 

Tools like Topsy and Trendsmap can show you what's trending in real-time.
