According to a new study Twitter is the world's fastest-growing social platform, followed by Facebook and Google+.
Twitter army
The data from Global Web Index shows that Twitter's user base grew to 288 million monthly active users from the second quarter to the fourth quarter of 2012, an increase of 40 per cent.
In 2009 Twitter had 35 million active users, that's a rise of 714 per cent in just over three years. Tellingly, 21 per cent of all internet users now use Twitter actively.
Active users good for advertisers
But the most impressive news – for Twitter and its advertisers – is that users are now more engaged than ever.
Over 59 per cent of Twitter users are active on a monthly basis, up from 50 per cent in the second quarter of 2012.
Second place
Facebook and Google+ make up second and third place respectively, a very respectable result for Google's social platform.
LinkedIn ranked in at sixth place, with Pinterest clocking in at number eight.
The Global Web Index study looked at 31 global markets and can be read in its entirety at globalwebindex.net.
